Information

Embark on an unforgettable journey to the Arctic wilderness with the FROST Russia Nomadic Nenets of Northern Siberia Photographic Tour, a 10-day adventure designed for photographers seeking to capture the raw beauty of one of the world’s most remote regions. Located in the Yamal Peninsula, deep in Northern Siberia, the Nenets people have preserved their nomadic lifestyle for over 1,000 years, living in harmony with the harsh Arctic environment. This tour offers an exclusive opportunity to live alongside the Nenets, photograph their traditional reindeer herding, and immerse yourself in their rich cultural practices.

Highlights include four full days of living with the Nenets in their reindeer-hide chums, participating in daily activities like herding, migrating, and preparing traditional meals. You’ll also experience the stunning landscapes of the Yamal Peninsula, photograph massive reindeer herds, and, if fortunate, attend the annual reindeer herders’ festival in Yar-Sale. With expert photographic guidance from FROST Photo Tours, this tour promises unique, intimate access to a disappearing way of life.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Day of Arrival

Arrive in Moscow at Domodedovo Airport, where you'll be greeted and transferred to the a nearby Airport Hotel. Take this time to relax and acclimate after your journey. You’ll enjoy a comfortable stay, preparing for your upcoming adventure into the Arctic wilderness. Tonight is your chance to rest, explore the nearby area, or enjoy dinner before your early flight to Salekhard tomorrow.

  • Day 2: Journey to the Nenets

After an early flight to Salekhard, you’ll be transferred via snowmobiles to meet the nomadic Nenets reindeer herders. This immersive journey takes you deep into the Yamal Peninsula, where you’ll experience the harsh yet stunning Arctic landscape. The Nenets, known for their traditional way of life, will welcome you into their community. Settle into your first night in a chum, a traditional reindeer-fur tent, where you’ll begin to witness the Nenets' unique culture firsthand.

  • Day 3-6: Life with the Nenets

Spend the next four days living alongside the Nenets, photographing and experiencing their daily life. This is a rare opportunity to witness their reindeer herding practices, participate in migrations, and learn about their ancient customs. The Nenets depend on their reindeer for everything—transport, food, and clothing—making this an incredibly authentic experience. You’ll be involved in various activities, such as cutting firewood, preparing meals, and learning traditional crafts. The flexible schedule allows for unparalleled access to their way of life, creating extraordinary opportunities for photography.

  • Day 7: Travel to Yar-Sale

On Day 7, bid farewell to the Nenets as you travel by snowmobile to the town of Yar-Sale. If the timing is right, you may be fortunate enough to attend the annual reindeer herders’ festival. This festival showcases traditional sports like sledge racing and Nenets wrestling, offering a lively and unique photographic experience. You’ll spend the night in a hotel in Yar-Sale, enjoying a warm, comfortable stay after your time in the nomadic camp.

  • Day 8-9: Salekhard & Buffer Day

Begin your journey back to Salekhard, crossing the frozen surface of the River Ob. The six-hour drive offers stunning Arctic views. Once in Salekhard, Day 9 serves as a buffer day to account for any potential weather delays. Use this time to explore the city’s fascinating history, including visits to the Shemanovskiy Yamal-Nenets Museum and the Polar Circle Monument. Enjoy the comfort of your hotel before your final departure.

  • Day 10: Day of Departure

Your Arctic adventure concludes as you transfer to Salekhard Airport for your flight back to Moscow. Reflect on the unique experiences and captivating images you’ve gathered during your time with the Nenets, and depart with unforgettable memories from one of the world’s most remote regions.
