Information

FROST Photo Tours is proud to present you with a Benin Photography Tour in West Africa. This carefully crafted photography tour reveals stories of python temples, stilted lake villages, secret mask societies and Voodoo traditions. The country comprises of 42 ethnic groups and lacks a religious majority. Benin is bordered by Nigeria to the east, Niger to the north, Burkina Faso to the northwest, and Togo to the west.

This Benin photography tour explores the very best photographic opportunities that the country has to offer and is perfectly timed to experience the renowned Voodoo Festival, located in Ouidah every year on 10th January. The festival is a fascinating cultural treat commemorating the recognition of Voodoo as the official religion of Benin since 1969. The celebration includes performances, rituals, large banquets, and sacrifices that draw fetish priests, traditional chiefs, voodoo healers, and onlookers from far and wide. Devotees assume the identity of gods, dressing up and transforming into them as they dance to the rhythmic drumming with the realm of the magical close at hand. This is the ideal photo tour for the intrepid traveler interested in remote places and cultures.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Day of Arrival

Your Benin photography tour begins in the country’s largest city, Cotonou, where you will be met by a FROST representative at the airport on arrival. At dinner, we will discuss your upcoming journey and share ideas for inspiration before your adventure officially begins.

  • Day 2: Ganvie, Cotonou and Surrounds

After a short overnight stay in Cotonou, we will depart early and make our way to Ganvie, a large lake village known as the 'Venice of Africa,' built on stilts in the middle of Lake Nokoué. After exploring Ganvie by boat, you will head back to Cotonou, visit Africa’s longest wall mural, and spend sunset at the impressive Amazon of Dahomey statue.

  • Day 3: Secrets of the West Coast

The following morning, we will visit a legendary Python Temple in Ouidah and stop at the Door of No Return monument. It is here in Ouidah where we'll rest our heads for the night before the festival activities begin tomorrow.

  • Day 4-5: Voodoo Festival Celebrations

We'll travel out to experience the highlight of this photographic tour - the Voodoo Festival in Ouidah and pre-celebrations at a secret location. It’s here that we first lay eyes on the Egungun, men draped in elaborate materials representing the spirits of departed ancestors. These mysterious living works of art are both fascinating and ominous - an incredible experience that you will never forget! This is one of Africa’s most authentic festival experiences. It can get chaotic at times, with endless music, dancing, and movement as the streets come alive.

  • Day 6: FROST Sacred Masks Northern Circuit

After the hustle and bustle of the festival, we enjoy a relaxed morning before continuing north along our route. Today offers a deeper cultural immersion, with a visit to the fascinating Fetish Market and a palace steeped in the history of local royalty. Through meaningful conversations, you’ll gain insight into the profound impact of the transatlantic slave trade, offering valuable perspective on the region’s past and present.

  • Day 7: Priests and Masks

Today is dedicated to more extraordinary cultural encounters as we journey onward. We spend time with spiritual leaders, visit places of worship that play a central role in community life, and witness a Gèlèdé mask ceremony, rich in symbolism, movement, and colour.

  • Day 8-9: Batonu Horsemen

In true FROST Photo Tours style, we venture into a remote northern region rarely visited, where we spend time documenting the remarkable Batonu Horsemen and their horses. Adorned with intricate regalia, both rider and horse move with a powerful sense of pride and presence, creating striking visual harmony. Morning and afternoon shoots allow us to work with changing light and shifting energy, offering varied perspectives and an exceptionally rewarding photographic experience.

  • Day 10-11: FROST Sacred Masks Southern Circuit

As we begin our journey south to Porto Novo, the cultural encounters deepen even further. We experience additional private mask dances, spend time in a Holi village, and explore striking examples of regional architecture along the way. These final days bring together movement and tradition, offering rich photographic opportunities as the journey draws toward its conclusion and the story of the past 11 days comes into full focus.

  • Day 12: Day of Departure

Enjoy your last morning of your Benin photography tour before transferring from Porto Novo to the airport for your international departure.
