On Safari in South Africa

Leopards of MalaMala Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands

South Africa is home to some of the most incredible biodiversity on the continent, with a variety of species protected within its national parks and private game reserves. While Kruger National Park is the most well-known and widely celebrated, offering a wildlife experience that ranks among the best in Africa, it’s the private game reserves bordering the park, like MalaMala Game Reserve, that offer exceptional opportunities for wildlife photographers. Here, you can encounter the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—up close in their natural environment.

Among these reserves, one of our favorite destinations for wildlife photography tours is the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. This area is famed for its rich wildlife population and, more specifically, its remarkable leopard sightings. Over the course of our 5-night photo safari in MalaMala, we had multiple opportunities to capture these elusive and majestic cats on camera.

Photographing the Leopards of the Sabi Sands

Leopards are known for their stealth and elusiveness, and spotting them is no easy task. Our days were filled with scanning rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds, and the classic ‘leopard trees’ where these predators are often found resting or hunting. Hours of searching paid off when we were finally rewarded with unforgettable sightings of these magnificent big cats.

As a wildlife photographer, the thrill of locating and capturing images of leopards in their natural habitat is unlike anything else. Their sleek movements, piercing eyes, and powerful presence make every encounter special. For me, the highlight is not just the moment I capture an iconic shot, but seeing the excitement on my guests’ faces as they capture their own images. Sharing this experience and helping them leave with a portfolio of stunning wildlife photographs is incredibly rewarding.

MalaMala’s Photographic Highlights

Beyond leopards, MalaMala Game Reserve offers an unparalleled diversity of wildlife. On our photo safaris, we often find ourselves photographing lions on the hunt, herds of elephants roaming through the bush, and buffalo on the move.

One of the greatest advantages of photographing wildlife in MalaMala is the off-road driving, allowing us to follow the animals from a respectful distance and position ourselves perfectly for the shot. The ability to track animals with the expertise of local guides ensures that no photographic opportunity is missed. No matter your experience level, the golden hours of sunrise and sunset in this reserve provide breathtaking light for capturing spectacular wildlife scenes.

A Photographic Journey to Remember

Every safari is unique, and every guest leaves with a different set of memories. However, the shared excitement of spotting and photographing the Big Five—and especially the elusive leopard—is something that connects everyone who embarks on a photo safari to MalaMala. The joy of spending time in one of Africa’s most exclusive reserves, paired with the opportunity to hone your wildlife photography skills, makes for an unforgettable experience.

For those seeking to build a diverse and exciting wildlife portfolio, MalaMala offers endless opportunities. And, as a guide, there’s no greater satisfaction than knowing that each guest walks away with both incredible memories and powerful images that they can cherish forever.
