Benin, a West African nation, boasts a rich cultural heritage, steeped in magical legends, spirits, and traditions. With 42 ethnic groups and a melting pot of religious beliefs, Benin offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Our Benin Magic on Earth Photo Tour took us on an unforgettable journey through the heart of this captivating country.
We began our adventure in Cotonou, the capital city, and spent our first night at a comfortable hotel. Our first excursion took us to the lake village of Ganvie, with a population of 30,000, the largest of its kind in Africa. The village’s history and resilience left us in awe, and the vibrant markets and picturesque canals offered endless photographic opportunities.
Ganvie, meaning ‘We Survived,’ has a fascinating history of determination and perseverance. Founded by members of the Tofinu Tribe, who were being pursued by the powerful Fon Tribe, the village has thrived on Lake Nokoue. We marveled at the traffic of boats in the morning, passing young boys throwing their fishing nets off picturesque balconies and women selling fruit and fresh fish from their floating markets.
In Lokossa, we experienced the mesmerizing Zangbetos festival, where traditional voodoo guardians of the night danced and twirled in their conical-shaped costumes. The energy was palpable, and the photography opportunities were unparalleled. We played with slow shutter speeds to capture the dynamic movements, and our guide, Kirsten, recommended using flash to pop the colors.
The Egungun festival in Cove was a highlight of our tour. The intense and powerful dance of the Egunguns, believed to be the spirits of departed ancestors, left us spellbound. The colorful costumes and symbolic motifs offered a wealth of photographic opportunities. We captured the vibrant energy of the dance, using slow shutter speeds and low angles.
The Guelede festival, honoring the mothers of the village, showcased stunning costumes and symbolic animals. The peaceful dance and powerful message made for a captivating photography experience. We focused on capturing the intricate details of the costumes, including the crocodile mask, stilt dancer, and burning fire spirit.
Throughout our journey, we encountered breathtaking landscapes, from the serene lake villages to the vibrant markets and stunning coastlines. Our photographic guide, Kirsten Frost, helped us perfect our skills and capture the essence of Benin’s beauty. We spent our evenings editing photographs, perfecting our technique, and relaxing by the pool.
Our final destination was Ouidah, a town with a fascinating and deeply traumatic history of the African slave trade. We visited the Door of No Return, commemorating the struggle against slavery, and the Python Temple, where we learned about the importance of pythons in the voodoo religion.
Our Benin Magic on Earth Photo Tour was a journey of discovery, not only of the country’s rich cultural heritage but also of our own photographic abilities. The experience left us with unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of Benin.
Words alone cannot do justice to the beauty and lively energy of this experience. The variety of photographic opportunities was endless, from moody portraits to atmospheric celebrations and bustling markets to peaceful landscapes. Benin has given us a fresh perspective on spirituality, religion, and the beauty of music, dance, and celebration.
